Welcome to A Smith of All Trades

Hello blogosphere,

Welcome to my craft/this is my life blog! I’ve been wanting to do a craft blog for some time now, but I couldn’t think of a name that I really liked for the darn thing. But here I am at 4:38 a.m. starting A Smith of All Trades and I have to say that I’m finally content with the name I created!

*sigh of relief*

So here’s my one-time explanation of the title:

I recently got married to my lovely husband and became a Smith — most boring last name on the planet? Yes. But that’s OK for many reasons:

1. My initials now spell my name: Jessica Evelyn Smith: JES. So that’s pretty cool.

2. No one will ever misspell my last name again.

3. Smith sticks with the tradesmen style of last name that both of my families have. I used to be a Bauer, which means “farmer” in German, and my mother’s maiden name is Rowicki, which means “ditch digger” in Polish. So, now I’m just a generic Smith and I can do all sorts of different trades. I am one who makes. Kinda cool, right?

Anyway, I wanted to start this blog when I started to make jewelry a few years back. In the meantime, I started working on a bunch of other craft projects and started realizing that I could blog about a lot more. I certainly have my strengths in some projects over others (I really suck at spray painting… like, really badly), but that I am a decent crafter in general. So I subbed in my new last name into the phrase “A Jack of all Trades.” Of course I quickly wikipediaed the phrase and realized that today the saying doesn’t have the best connotation, especially when paired with latter part, “A master of none.” … But, whatever — back in the day it was a good thing, and sometimes old school is the way to go.

So, there you have it. I am a Smith of all Trades. Welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy the projects I share with you and other funny stories about my life along the way.
